SEE MONSTER

SEE MONSTER is a retired offshore platform from the North Sea, transformed into the UKs Largest public art installations.

The monster is the biggest platform of its kind to tell stories, inspire global conversations about reuse, renewables and the great British weather. SEE MONSTER brings together the full STEAM spectrum of science, technology, art and mathematics – from inception to installation. This hugely unique world first project is one of the most challenging and ambitious artistic feats to be undertaken in the United Kingdom.

Entering the cavernous underbelly of the cellar deck, you note the past of drilling sunshine and carbon from the earth however above you is the cloud portal is a large 10 meter sculptural installation that comes to life celebrating cloud formations within its perimeter. As you journey up the enormous beast, the hum of the metal through the monsters bones a silvery cascade of scales wrap around the bones. These 6000 shimmering scales perform a light audio in the changing wind of Weston’s seafront. The Garden Lab tells our story of using sunshine in a different way. You are greeted by a luscious green spectacle of trees and former that have overtaken and reclaimed the beast. The kinetic sculptures, solar tree and wind nest designed by international designers allow you to playfully investigate the future. The highest point of the SEE MONSTER is the heli deck where you hear a shipping forecast, you can view the town and coast from a different angle. This almost nostalgic and calming setting is for contemplation bringing the British psyche to the forefront as well as an opportunity to come and learn about our changing world through partnerships with the Natural History Museum and other artists.

Created by Patrick O Mahony the creative director and founder of NEWSUBSTANCE other collaborations drove the narrative from a science and climate perspective. These specialists’ podcasters such as Dr Ella Gilbert and Dr Amelie Kirchgaessner and The Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) with other members of the team, developed a series of educational and learning packs for teachers and lecturers of all ages to download and explore deeper into the heart of the installation. Think tanks developed to bring the community into the installation and town, the most successful of these being Weathering Together an audio sound piece that sat on the viewing deck and within the ‘awakening drone shows’ in august. Niccy also brought in Dr Amit Patel to ensure that accessibility sat within every element of the design process to great success. (Commissioned as part of UNBOXED).
